FIA Tightens Travel Rules to Curb Illegal Migration to Europe
- Mandates Affidavit from Grade 18 or 19 Officer before flying abroad for work; 150 passengers offloaded in a week
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has made it mandatory for Pakistanis traveling abroad for employment to present a signed affidavit from a Grade 18 or 19 government officer, in a move aimed at curbing illegal migration to Europe.
Under the new rule, travelers must submit an affidavit confirming that they will work only at their stated place of employment and not attempt to enter Europe illegally. The FIA said the requirement applies to all jobseekers departing through private overseas employment channels.
Officials confirmed that nearly 150 passengers were offloaded from flights at Lahore and other airports within a week for failing to produce the required verification.
An FIA immigration officer at Lahore Airport said the measure was introduced following a rise in cases where passengers who initially traveled to Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, or Thailand later tried to illegally enter Europe via Libya or Baku.
“Only those presenting an affidavit verified by a senior government officer will be allowed to travel,” the officer said, adding that the Protectorate of Emigrants has now stationed inspectors at airports to verify documents and assist genuine workers.
Passengers traveling under the Overseas Employment Corporation (OEC) are being cleared without difficulty, while those linked to private recruitment agencies must undergo additional verification before boarding.
The decision has drawn criticism from travelers, who call the new rule unfair and burdensome, arguing that it penalizes legitimate workers who already possess valid documents and work visas.
Officials, however, insist the policy is essential to prevent human trafficking and illegal border crossings, stressing that it will help protect Pakistan’s image abroad and ensure only bona fide workers travel for employment.
