In a significant development, Pakistan Refinery Limited (PRL) has inked pivotal license agreements with industry leaders Honeywell UOP and Axens for its ambitious Refinery Expansion and Upgrade Project (REUP). The project’s primary objective is to double PRL’s refining capacity from the current 50kbpd to 100kbpd while transitioning the existing hydro skimming configuration to a deep conversion refinery. This strategic move positions PRL to generate value-added products and EURO V-compliant fuels, aligning with environmentally preferable standards compared to conventional automotive fuels.

PRL has opted for cutting-edge process technologies from global leaders in the field. Honeywell UOP has been chosen for bottom-of-the-barrel conversion technology and naphtha processing, incorporating the Residue Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Process, the LPG Merox process, and a Naphtha complex. This complex features a naphtha hydrotreater and a CCR Platforming unit. On the other hand, Axens will supply Prime G+®, Prime D™, and Polynaphtha™ to meet Euro V gasoline and diesel specifications.

This collaboration signifies a revolutionary leap in PRL’s refining capabilities, contributing substantively to sustainable energy solutions. Zahid Mir, the Managing Director and CEO of PRL, conveyed his enthusiasm regarding these partnerships, emphasizing, “Our collaboration with Honeywell UOP and Axens represents a significant milestone in our journey toward refinery modernization. These accolades underscore our dedication to embracing advanced technologies for sustainable and efficient operations. We anticipate that these partnerships will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Pakistan’s energy landscape.”

This endeavor epitomizes PRL’s proactive stance in sculpting a future where innovation seamlessly integrates with environmental responsibility, laying the groundwork for a more sustainable and energy-efficient Pakistan.
