Hey, Is Temu Legit? Here’s What You Should Know Before Ordering

Consider Temu for budget-friendly online shopping. Let’s dive in. A Chinese online store has gained fast popularity for its ultra-low prices, with items like sunglasses for $2, necklaces for $1, and glow-in-the-dark pet collars for $3, often under $30.

While it’s likened to Shein, Wish, and AliExpress, Temu stands out from a wider product range. Shein focuses on fashion, while Wish and AliExpress are known for lower quality and slower shipping.

Launched in September 2022, this online store quickly gained traction and expanded to the UK in April 2023. You can shop on their website or app, available on the App Store and Google Play, offering games and earning opportunities. Despite enticing ads and low prices, is it a trustworthy choice? Keep reading to find out.

Is Temu a legitimate website?

Most products on this online shopping are legitimate, with delivery taking approximately 10 days. However, tech products lack name-brand assurance unless they sport a blue checkmark, currently held only by Xiaomi and Lenovo.

Some customers report discrepancies in appearance and quality. Late deliveries with standard shipping receive a $5 credit, while express shipping late arrivals earn a $13 credit. Product quality varies, similar to other online stores.

If items differ from their online listing, arrive damaged, or fail to arrive, it Purchases Protection Program offers a full refund when items are returned within 90 days of purchase.

Why is Temu controversial?

The U.S. government raised data risk concerns about its following Google’s suspension of its sister site Pinduoduo due to malware. However, CNBC analysts believe that this online shop poses a lesser threat, with the risks mainly affecting Chinese users.

Moreover, the U.S. House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party reported that it doesn’t ensure compliance with the Uyghur Forced Labor Act for products on its platform. The report also alleges that this chines online shop exploits a U.S. commerce loophole to bypass tariffs and evade compliance with American commerce laws.

Are the products on Temu good quality?

Temu lacks BBB accreditation and holds a two-star average rating, with numerous recent complaints citing non-delivery or significant delays.

On social media platforms like TikTok, Temu enjoys positive reviews, gaining popularity for a range of products from gadgets to clothing.

Personally, I’ve had mostly trouble-free experiences with this service, though some low-cost items were of expected quality. Overall, its products align with expectations for their price range, generally ranging from $1 to $3.

Who owns Temu?

This online shopping is under the umbrella of PDD Holdings, a global commerce group based in Dublin, Ireland, which also owns Pinduoduo. The company’s precise origin is somewhat unclear. In early 2023, Pinduoduo Inc. changed its name to PDD Holdings and relocated its main offices from Shanghai to Dublin. Such moves are common among tech companies seeking favorable corporate tax rates, even American ones.

It claims to have originated in Boston in 2022, though its ‘About Us‘ page doesn’t mention its parent company, as noted by The Washington Post. The Boston office serves as a central hub connected to it’s worldwide offices. Boston’s proximity to Canada also played a role in Temu’s decision to set up shop there, as reported by the Boston Globe.

How is everything on Temu so cheap?

It offers incredibly affordable products by acting as a go-between for customers and suppliers, managing shipping but not owning the products.

Its parent company, PDD Holdings, also owns the Chinese platform Pinduoduo, which generated $18 billion in revenue in 2022.

Critics, however, claim it keeps prices low in the U.S. by exploiting the de minimis loophole, allowing imports under $800 to enter the country without duties, taxes, fees, or strict inspections, potentially sidestepping import costs and inspections.

Does Temu produce its products ethically?

This online shopping reverse-manufacturing model reduces waste by aligning with customer preferences. Its Third Party Code of Conduct forbids forced labor, emphasizing compliance with labor laws and safety.

Concerned about environmental ethics, Temu and similar platforms claim sustainability efforts, but questions surround their chemical use and the transparency of carbon offset programs.

The U.S. House Select Committee report highlights the Chinese online shopping inadequate verification of products to ensure they aren’t linked to forced labor, a crucial issue given the ban on Xinjiang region items, notorious for forced labor concerns.

What data does Temu collect from you?

E-commerce apps collect diverse user data, from personal details to browsing history, often for tracking and targeted ads. Concerns about data privacy, especially with Chinese apps, are rising.

Notably, U.S. citizen data lacks comprehensive federal protection, resulting in varying state-level regulations. This allows apps to collect a wide range of data, including sensitive information.

As a result, users must make personal choices about data sharing, as apps can access extensive information without robust federal oversight.

Is Temu a good company to buy from?

Online shopping carries risks, including fake reviews that undermine trust. Problems like lost or damaged packages and item disparities are common. It’s standard U.S. shipping takes 7-15 business days, and for delivery issues, contact customer service within 90 days of purchase.
