K-Electric Set to Boost Power Imports to 3,456MW Under Revised National Plan
Rising demand, stronger grid links, and new studies point to growth potential for investors
K-Electric is poised for a major power supply boost as the revised Indicative Generation Capacity Expansion Plan (IGCEP) 2025–2035 projects electricity exports from the National Grid to the utility will surge to 3,456 megawatts (MW) by 2035—up sharply from 2,050 MW previously planned. The higher allocation signals growing confidence in Karachi’s energy demand and K-Electric’s expanding role in Pakistan’s power ecosystem.
The needs assessment under the new IGCEP highlights that the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) and K-Electric will jointly conduct detailed cost and system reinforcement studies to evaluate the most efficient route for these increased imports. The collaboration aims to optimize investment between renewable generation and imported power while ensuring grid stability.
K-Electric, which serves over 3.5 million consumers across Karachi and adjoining regions, remains a key player in Pakistan’s evolving energy market. Analysts view the expanded grid integration as a positive indicator for K-Electric’s growth trajectory, with rising demand translating into stronger revenue streams and potential operational efficiencies.
The planned reinforcement of transmission networks and increased national grid reliance could position K-Electric favorably for future energy investments.
On Thursday, the K-Electric held its Board of Directors (BOD) meeting. It discussed various issues including the MYT, write-offs and some upcoming development projects. Official on the condition of anonymity said.
